Sigma interview (mirrorless is growing and we will make more lenses for it)

DSLRmagazine (google translation here) posted an interesting Interview with Sigma CEO Kazuto Yamaki. Those are some of the interesting answers:

- We are checking the cine lens market and if there is a place for us there.

- We are studying to possibility to make a Full Frame f/1.8 zoom just like the 18-35mm f/1.8 APS-C lens. The issue here is to keep the size reasonable

- We are sure mirrorless will growth and we will expand our presence there

- I'ts a bit more difficult to make ART lenses for the Sony FE system because of the not so large diameter of the mount. We don't know why Sony did this. Likely because the E-mount was meant for APS-C first and only after that they did use it for FF too.

- We are aware that Canon and Sony are working on a similar "foveon" technology

- Our current APS-C sensor match the medium format sensor quality. And it would not be a problem for us to make even larger (medium format) Foveon sensors. But the medium format market is shrinking...

- If we do a mirrorless system camera than we have to be sure to be able to support that system in future

- yes we have other companies interested in using our Foveon sensor.

- we expect companies to announce PRO stuff at CP+ in February

Very interesting as usual. Sigma and CEO Kazuto Yamaki are really a nice small family company and I wish them to keep having success in future!!!

The "mini-NX1" is coming in February (NX400)

I got this rumor from a very good Samsung source:

Not sure they'll succeed in doing this, but at nx team they are doing their best to get the nx400 ready for the cp+ show in February.

Confirmed the same sensor and AF system as nx1. No weather sealing, smaller buffer (but much bigger than older models).

Would certainly be nice if it becomes true!

Genious! You can now replace your E-mount with a more solid full metal ring!

Fotodiox launched a new products which will make many E-mount camera owners very happy! It replaces the current hybrid metal-plastic mount ring with a full metal ring! That way you get rid of the "wiggling" you get on longer lenses. You can buy it for $39 at Amazon US (Click here).

Here is the full press text and a video which explains it:

Sony's line of E-Mount (previously called "NEX") cameras are amazingly powerful little cameras, but they have one flaw. The lens mount is a two part construction, with the critical component that holds the lens in place made of plastic. This is why any lens you attach to an E mount camera is prone to wiggling, especially longer pro lenses.

Fotodiox has created the solution - 'The TOUGH E-Mount' modification kit. Anyone can replace the original 2 piece NEX mount on their camera with an all-metal one in about five minutes. All you need is a jewelers screwdriver (phillips) to remove and replace four little screws. We've created a video to show you how easy it is:

Once you've installed the Fotodiox The TOUGH E-Mount, you can mount practically any sized pro lens on your Sony E-mount camera using one our full line of E-Mount lens adapters. With the powerful combination of our TOUGH E-Mount modification and our lens adapters, you can be confident of a solid and professional fit.

50 Megapixel Full Frame sensor generation coming first quarter of 2015!

Both Sony and Canon will announce Full Frame cameras with around 50 Megapixel during the first quarter of 2015. Those cameras will likely be displayed at the CP+ show which starts in mid February.

The Sony 46 Megapixel FF camera will almost certainly be a new E-mount A7 (or A9?). It will feature an advanced autofocusing system based on the current A6000 hybrid af camera.

Canon is likely to announce a new DSLR with such a 50MP sensor. But there is a small chance Canon could use that sensor also on a new Full Frame mirrorless system camera.

I am 100% sure those kind of sensors are coming early 2015. We have an exciting time ahead of us!

Samsung NX1 goes to Madagascar (and Samung profits goes down).

Samsung published that great NX1 4K video shot in Madagascar. Looks great and definitely much better than their current financial results :)

Reuters reports:

Samsung Electronics Co Ltd is heading for its first annual earnings drop since 2011 after it revealed its July-September profit would be the lowest in more than three years and said short-term prospects for smartphones were uncertain.

Until now Samsung seemed to be "Immune" to the crisis and unlike many Japanese competitor it was doing well in the smartphone market (not so in the camera market). Hopefully Samsung will recover soon as Panasonic did (and not end like Sony!).

New TFD "Foveon alike" sensor has 36 layers!

Spanish researcher from the University of Granada announced a new kind of sensor having 36 different colored layers(!). It works just like the Sigma Foveon sensor but Sigma uses only three layers (Red-Green-Blue) aligned vertically one below the other. The current Sigma and Bayer sensors only extracts information from one of these three colours (RGB) in each pixel within the image. To extract the information from the rest of colours in each pixel, it is necessary to apply algorithms which in most cases are among manufacturers’ best-kept secrets.

The new 36 layer sensor named "Transverse Field Detectors (TFD)" can obtain up to twelve times more color information than the human eye!

According to the PI in this group, Miguel Ángel Martínez Domingo:

“the new sensors developed at the Polytechnic University of Milan are called Transverse Field Detectors (TFD) and they are capable of extracting the full colour information from each pixel in the image without the need for a layer of colour filter on them.

In order to do so, they take advantage of a physical phenomenon by virtue of which each photon penetrates at a different depth depending on its wavelength, i.e., its colour. In this way, by collecting these photons at different depths on the silice surface of the sensor, the different channels of colour can be separated without the necessity of filters.”

There is yet no info about when these kind of sensor will make it into a real mass production camera.

More info about the sensor at Opticsinfobase.org and Canal.

Canon teases something BIG!

CanonWatch spotted that important Canon teaser posted on the New York Time! For weeks now it's rumored Canon will announce a new High Megapixel camera. And Canon itself also said they could launch a new "mirrorless" mount system. So maybe a serious FF mirrorless is finally coming for real?

I believe that's a "normal" DSLR camera with around 50MP. But I hope to be proved wrong :)

This is the teaser text:

THIS MESSAGE GOES

OUT TO FEAR, DOUBT,

LOGIC AND REASON.

To excuses, distractions, procrastination, inertia, critics, cynics,

realists, pessimists, resistance, conventional wisdom.

To the peanut gallery, the so-called experts, the good enoughs,

the urges to pass the buck,

the easy way out, the snooze button, the panic button,

and to that little voice in the back of your head that says,

“It can’t be done.”

To all of it, we apologize.

Because we don’t see what you see.

AT CANON, WE SEE IMPOSSIBLE

The second curved sensor is Full Frame and now it's really easy to guess it's coming very soon! This should be the long time rumored Full Frame RX with 30+ Megapixel curved sensor and fixed lens 35mm f/1.8 Zeiss!
