Big Germany camera sales report: Mirrorless is on raise!

The German Photoindustrie Verband published and incredibly detailed report about the camera market sales in Germany. Here are some of their key findings:

1) The graph on tops shows how the system camera market is dropping. But the Mirrorless system cameras managed to growth(!) despite the fall of overall sales. The DSLR market is really falling rapidly.

2) Mirrorless system camera unit sales numbers did grow with 17,4% in 2014 compared to 2013. And overall revenue increased by 26,2%.

3) The surprising boom comes via Actioncameras:

4) In 2014 for the first time since many years also lens sales are dropping.

5) More charts show that Photo book sales are increasing while accessory sales are slowing down.

We are really on the verge of a big change in Germany. Wearables, smartphones and action cameras are the markets that are growing while the DSLR and compact camera market is falling. Mirrorless can hold the ground and even manages to have a growth. But still, system cameras will more and more become a niche product compared to the massive growth of the new kind of devices people are using to take pictures and videos.

Some info about the future NX1 firmware update features....

A source just sent me this:

One of the incoming fw for nx1 will have a new algorithm for af tracking of moving subjects. They claim a 100% (or even more) improvement in accuracy with c-af and multi point focus. They told me the camera will easily beat any pro dslr on the market after the update.

What you see on those two pics are the new Panasonic Lumix G 42,5mm f/1.7 Mega OIS lens and the Panasonic Lumix G 30mm f/2.8 Mega OIS macro. There is no info about price and detailed specs yet. But I guess full Panasonic press release will follow soon...

Canon thinks “compact” and “full-frame” really don’t belong in the same sentence together.

CanonWatch summed up an IR interview with Canon and it's clear how Canon sees little value yet in offering a Full F rame mirrorless. The main issue they have is that FF mirrorless isn't really compact if you look at the camera+lens size. And certainly if you look at the Sony FE lens offerings you really cannot say they are MUCH smaller than DSLR lenses.

Yoshiyuki Mizoguchi from Canon said:

In terms of how we view the role of mirrorless, first it’s within the EOS framework that we’re talking about. There was obviously the need to pursue smaller products that were more lightweight. So we kind of view the EOS mirrorless cameras from that perspective to begin with. It’s not just looking in terms of solely as a mirrorless product, but within the interchangeable lens camera segment. We kind of view it as playing a role within that … sort of an extended view, as a means of achieving a more compact, lightweight product. There was obviously the question of whether or not, within the regular DSLR format, there was a demand for lighter, smaller products. You know, there are various approaches on that, but this is a means for us to address that issue within sort of the EOS universe.

Well let's see if Canon is just hiding their cards yet...

Sony now leads the mirrorless market in Japan while MFT partners keep loosing terrain.

The full 2014 digital camera sales data in Japan has been published by BCNranking. And the new 2015 king is Sony which now holds 34.3% of the market share. Olympus and Panasonic both lost a bit of terrain. The data doesn't show the rest of companies market shares but if Panasonic keeps falling Fuji and Canon may will kick them out from the top position.

Double Fuji rumors: X-T10 and X-PRO2 coming in 2015

We have a double rumor about Fuji:

X-PRO2:

Fujirumors reports about info spilled out by Fuji in an interview with the Spanish site DSLRmagazine.

1) HYBRID VIEWFINDER: The XF 35mmF2 looks a lot like the Leica Summicron-M 50mmF2 [admin: let’s just hope it won’t be that expensive!!!… even with the , this lens is worth about 1/3 of my yearly teachers salary!!… though this version costs “just” $2,100 (discounted)]. But back to the XF 35mmF2: the compact size makes it perfect for cameras with Hybrid Viewfinder – ERGO: the X-PRO2 will feature a Hybrid Viewfinder. In the interview, the manager also said that customers demand to keep the X-PRO1 concept. DSLRmagazine thinks that this statement is another hint for an X-PRO2 with Hybrid Viewfinder.

2) MORE COMPACT: After the talk with the manager, DSLRmagazine concludes that the X-PRO2 will have the elegance and great operability of the Leica CL… it won’t be as small as the Leica CL, but smaller than the actual X-PRO1.

3) X-TRANS: It will have an evolution (not revolution) of the X-TRANS sensor.

4) Not X-PRO2 related, but the manager says that the 56 APD version isn’t really selling well. You can find a .

5) The X-M line is dead. Long live the X-A line!

And than we have also rumors about another camera:

X-T10

Fujirumors reports that it will be a downspecced X-T1. There is yet not info about the final specs but it shoudl come within 2015.

We love that: Canon shows a new 120 megapixel sensor!

Guys! Be prepared. Soon you will have to buy ton of hardware to handle the 120 megapixel photos that the new Canon sensor will take!

Dpreview reports:

Its surface area is halfway between APS-C and full-frame, and it appears to be mostly directed at video applications, capable of recording at approximately 60x the resolution of Full HD. The frame rate of read-out for this ultra high-resolution is 9.5fps, and is made possible by reading multiple pixels simultaneously at high speeds - a process Canon is calling 'parallel signal processing'. The 120 million pixels - of 2.2 µm pixel pitch - are contained on a sensor 29.2mm x 20.2mm in size, yielding pixel dimensions of 13280x9184.

We love that new crazy Megapixel race! Finally we can take 100+ Megapixel shots of our beloved cats sitting on a sofa :)

Mayflower believes it's not the smartphones that almost "Killed" the digital compact camera market..

Mayflower posted a completely different theory that explains why the digital compact camera and the system camera sales are falling dramatically.

They blame the poor usability and lack of customer oriented camera development. In short it's time for the camera manufacturers to develop a sort of iPhone alike friendly camera. Ok that was veeeery simplified from me :)

Very into the wild of rumors: Fuji double mount camera coming?

The Contax Hybrid Mount Camera with a combination of two bayonets (courtesy of fotocommunity)

Fujirumors posted a set of very wild rumors on upcoming Fuji stuff. It's coming via Chinese sources so keep it with a grain of salt. Particularly that strange dual mount rumor:

1) X-Pro2 will not be launched on first quarter of 2015, but there are 2 SPEC… [FUJIRUMORS: It’s probably correct that the X-PRO2 won’t come in the first quarter. I’m not sure what “but there are 2 SPEC” means. Probably 2 versions (“species”).]

2) XF20 F2.8 (equal = 30MM / pancake) or XF18 F2.8(equal = 27MM / pancake), will be launching soon.

3) XF35 F1.4(II) , better IQ & bokeh & focus speed a bit faster than XF23, price over HK$ 4000 [FUJIRUMORS: there were rumors in 2014 about it. Apparently Fuji tested an APD version of it, but then dismissed it – source Fuji Manager]

4) OCT-DEC will be a big cannon show up (4XX) (*Forum ppl believe is 140 -400mm)

5) DUAL MOUNT PRODUCT may launch in mid of the year [FUJIRUMORS: My comment about this down below]

6) New phase auto focus system (can compete with DSLR), will come out in X-Mount. [FUJIRUMORS: why not? Sony’s bestseller, the A6000, shows the way]

7) High Speed Pro Flash light, synchronize rate improve to pro standard [FUJIRUMORS: New flash coming in spring]

8) Body will back light prevention setting system (2015 mid / year-end)

9) New fix lens camera will launching before March (” X ” 1 – 2 model) [FUJIRUMORS: He could mean the XQ2, since it was shared on the dchome forum before the official announcement of the XQ2]

10) X-M1 successor already develop, just do not know will launch or not

11) Fuji Japan still analyses a program that user by pay some amount of $$ and can upgrade the part (item (5)- (8) ). They hope user can use the model for longer time without refresh model too fast.

12) XF16 1.4 – Hot summer launching

13) google translated: “X-E3 has a row you wait for” [FUJIRUMORS: sounds like Fuji is debating (has a row) regarding the X-E2 successor, which eventually is expected to come in 2016, since, according to joofei… (see Nr.14)

14) X-E3 => 2016
